    Doesn't sound like he's in shock - when they are it's like
    they are paralyzed and don't do a thing.

    He's scared to death of being eaten by the cat! Poor thing
    runs and hides from the predator. The cat is obviosly
    inclined to have birdy for dinner, so please keep them
    apart - no matter what it takes. The poor bird IS locked
    behind bars now out of fear.
