    I think what you've described is the best idea I've ever
    heard! They naturally tunnel into the sides of riverbeds,
    so you've just given them the closed to their natural
    habitat.

    For my pattys, I used a rectangular box with a baffle inside
    that they had to go around to get into the "dark" side of
    the nestbox. The dimensions were about 9" high by 12" wide
    by 30" long if I remember correctly. The baffle was placed
    a little closer to the front entrance, say maybe 1/3 of the
    way, leaving a very dark roomy "enclosed" area. They laid
    eggs, but were never fertile.
