Post: Covering Birds at night?

I can't find an answer to this online. I was reading that
finches need a certain amount of light everyday before they
reproduce. I was wondering whether covering them at night
has any value. I have them up high, away from drafts. I
thought covering might help them feel more secure because
they retreat to their nest even after I continue to watch
TV or listen to music (not too loud near them).

    Any thoughts?
